Most people searching for a QR code generator do not know there are two different products with the same name, and the difference decides which one they should use. Getting it wrong means either paying a monthly fee you did not need, or printing five thousand flyers pointing at a URL you cannot change.

The actual difference

A static QR code contains the destination. The URL is encoded directly in the pattern of squares. Scanning it reads the URL out and goes there. Nothing sits in between, nothing is being looked up, and nothing can stop working. It is a printed link.

A dynamic QR code contains a redirect. The pattern encodes a short URL owned by the service that made it. Scanning goes to that service, which then forwards the visitor to whatever destination is currently configured. Because the destination is a setting rather than part of the image, it can be changed after printing — and because every scan passes through, the service can count them.

What each one buys you

Dynamic codes offer two genuine things: editable destinations, and scan analytics. If you are printing at volume, running campaigns where the landing page will change, or need to report on scan numbers, those are real and worth paying for.

They also carry a cost people underestimate. The code depends permanently on a third party. If you stop paying, the redirect usually stops working — and every code you have ever printed dies with it. Codes on packaging, on signage, on business cards, on things you no longer control. That is not a hypothetical; it is the standard commercial model, and the leverage sits entirely with the vendor.

Static codes have none of that. Nothing to renew, nothing to expire, no account, no dependency. Print it on a wall and it will still resolve in ten years, provided the URL still exists. What you give up is the ability to change where it points, and any built-in tracking.

Which one you need

Static is right when the destination is stable and you do not need scan counts: your homepage on a business card, a menu on a table, a wifi network, a contact card, an event page, a portfolio on a slide. It is also right for anything going onto something permanent, precisely because it cannot be switched off by someone else.

Dynamic is right when you genuinely need to change the destination later or measure scans as a campaign metric — and when you are comfortable with the ongoing dependency.

A useful middle path: point a static code at a URL you control and redirect from your own server. You keep the ability to change the destination without renting the redirect from anyone, though you handle the analytics yourself.

Making a static one

  • PNG or SVG output. Take the SVG for anything going to print — it scales to any size without going soft. PNG is fine on screen.
  • Error correction, L through H. This determines how much of the code can be damaged or obscured while still scanning: roughly 7%, 15%, 25% and 30% respectively. Higher correction means a denser pattern.
  • Size and border control. The border is not decoration — scanners need that quiet zone to find the code at all.
  • Foreground and background colours, and an optional logo overlay.

Four things that break QR codes in the real world

Not enough contrast. Dark pattern on a light background, with a real difference between them. Mid-grey on mid-blue looks smart in the design and fails on a phone in poor light. Do not invert the code either — some scanners cope, many do not.

Removing the quiet zone. Designers crop the white margin to make the code sit tighter in a layout. That margin is functional. Leave it.

Printing too small. A code on a poster is read from across a room; a code on a business card from arm’s length. The rough guide is that scanning distance is about ten times the width of the code — so plan the size around where people will actually stand.

Logo overlays that go too far. A logo works because error correction can absorb some obstruction. Set correction to H if you are adding one, keep it small and central, and test the printed result — not just the version on your screen.

Test with more than one phone before committing to a print run. Camera apps differ, and the one that matters is the one your audience is holding.

A note on privacy
